4 O'CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON
The Board of Directors of the Loyola Institute for Spirituality (LIS) created the Hearts on Fire Award in 2003 to annually recognize outstanding Christians whose contributions to spirituality, community service, and Christian leadership have been inspired by their formation in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. The Spiritual Exercises form the basis of the Institute’s vision, mission, and broad array of multicultural and ecumenical services and programs. The award is bestowed by the Loyola Institute at its annual fundraising dinner celebration held in the Spring.

Loyola Institute for Spirituality works to promote a faith that does justice, in the tradition of St. Ignatius of Loyola. We bring spirituality to life by inviting spiritual seekers to transformation, fostering Ignatian formation and education, and nurturing discipleship.
WHAT WE DO
Loyola Institute for Spirituality (LIS) was founded in 1997 to bring Ignatian Spirituality to people in their everyday lives. LIS was founded with the same intention St. Ignatius of Loyola identified when he adapted his Spiritual Exercises from a 30-day retreat into a more accessible 9-month retreat to be done amidst one's daily activities. Our origins were as a retreat house but the Jesuits felt that asking retreatants to come to them was not as powerful or meaningful as bringing the Spiritual Exercises and Spiritual Formation Programs to meet people where they are.
LIS provides opportunities for spiritual engagement and development for all seekers of spiritual freedom and relationship with our Creator. We provide opportunities for individual study, leadership development, retreats, special events, and groups. For more details about our offerings please click the "List of Programs" below.
WHY WE DO IT
In February 2019, Father General, Arturo Sosa, SJ announced the Universal Apostolic Preferences to guide the Society of Jesus and ministers of Ignatian Spirituality over the next decade. They are: showing the way to God; walking with the excluded; journeying with youth; and caring for our common home.
We at LIS have taken time to reflect on these four preferences and are working to incorporate them into our programming and outreach. With the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola as an instrument, we are inspired to go forth to meet people where they are and provide the gift of Ignatian Spirituality to all those seeking a deeper connection with Christ.
